Tribal Art Fair 2015

The thirteenth annual Amsterdam Tribal Art Fair will be held from October 30–November 1 in the De Duif church, a mid-nineteenth century Catholic edifice that is now used to host a variety of events. Twenty galleries, both Dutch and from abroad, will be on hand to present a large selection of masks, figures, ornaments, textiles, and utilitarian objects from Africa, Oceania, Asia, and the Americas. The arts of Indonesia and New Guinea historically have been especially well represented in this show, making it a point of honor for dealers to bring increasingly better pieces. The show is always an interesting event both for experienced collectors as well as for those who are just beginning to explore this vast and fascinating field.

Hughes Dubois. 35 ans de carrière photographique

As one of the many special exhibitions in this year's edition of Parcours des Mondes, Tribal Art Magazine will present Hughes Dubois. 35 ans de carrière photographique from September 8–13 at 22 rue Visconti in Paris. This installation celebrates the well-known photographer's three and a half decades in the field, showcasing his work with tribal material through some 186 Polaroids. The exhibition will also offer a look at a new project of Dubois's devoted to nighttime images of the majestic temple of Borobudur in Indonesia.

Tribal Art London 2015

The “tribal art season” is coming again to London. From September 2–5, the 2015 edition of Tribal Art London will be held at the Mall Galleries with nineteen international participants specialized in the non-European arts, including four new ones: Gallery Lemaire from Amsterdam and Handbury Tribal Art, Kenn MacKay, and Sabine & Anderson from the UK. Well-known Oceanic art dealer Wayne Heathcote will also return to the show this year.

Le Monde Covers Parcours des Mondes 2015

This year's upcoming edition of Parcours des Mondes was the subject of a June article in Le Monde. Examining the growth and popularity of the event and the tribal art market at large, the piece featured Jacaranda amid a group of distinguished international tribal art dealers and led with a highlight of a gorgeous Tsonga headrest in our collection. 

"Quant aux prix glanés dans les différentes galeries, ils varient selon la rareté, la traçabilité, l’état de l’objet. Ainsi, Roger Bourahimou vend ses pièces « rares et atypiques d’Afrique centrale » entre 1 500 et 200 000 euros. MATA 2015

Madison Ancient and Tribal Art (MATA) 2015 will feature displays of art from Africa, Oceania, Indonesia, and the Americas arrayed on four floors of the townhouse that once housed the venerable Perls Galleries. Exhibiting dealers include Marc Assayag, Kellim Brown, Bruce Frank, Wayne Heathcote, Jacaranda Tribal, Patrick Mestdagh, Nasser & Co, Michael Oliver, Michael Rhodes, Splendors of the World, and James Stephenson. Other MATA members will be holding special exhibitions off-site on the Upper East Side. These include Arte Primitivo, Pace Primitive, and Hunt Fine Arts.

AOA New York Art Fair 2015

Now in its fifth year, the AOA NY art fair will be held at Tambaran Gallery from May 14–17, 2015. Somewhat reduced in size from previous years, this event remains a worthy destination, the more so since besides its dealer roster—which this year includes Galerie Flak from Paris and Mark Eglinton and James Trotta-Bono from New York, among others—it is cross-pollinating with contemporary art in the hope of attracting more than the usual tribal art audience. These contemporary works have been selected because of their harmonious affinity with the traditional arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas.

MATA NYC - November 2014

A new edition of Madison Ancient and Tribal Art will be presented at Arader Gallery on 1016 Madison Ave in New York on November 8–11. Among the participating dealers will be Marc Assayag, Bruce Frank, Patrick Mestdagh, James Stephenson, Michael Oliver and Michael Rhodes.

PAN Amsterdam 2014

From November 23–30, Amsterdam will be in the spotlight again with PAN Amsterdam, the country’s largest contemporary art, design, and antiques show, which brings in about 45,000 visitors every year. The event now deserves to be on the tribal art enthusiast’s itinerary, since as of last year, it has included a tribal arts pavilion featuring the Brussels galleries of Jo de Buck and Joris Visser, as well as the national Sanne Nies Salon Tribal Art organization.

Tribal Art Fair Amsterdam 2014

Tribal Art Fair Amsterdam 2014 will take place October 23–26 in its traditional home at De Duif on the Prinsengracht. It will host some twenty dealers specializing in non-European arts, hailing from both the Netherlands and from neighboring countries. Many masks, figures, ornaments, textiles, and other objects will be the focus of attention.

PAD London 2014

PAD, the twentieth-century art and design fair, will be held this year in London's Berkeley Square from October 15–19, and will be an important venue for the presentation of non-European art with the inclusion of four distinguished dealers. Veteran participant Galerie Bernard Dulon will show mostly African art, with an emphasis on works from Cameroon and Gabon. African art will also be the focus of displays by Alain de Monbrison and Lucas Ratton, while Galerie Flak will present an exhibition titled Pure Forms, which transcends geographic borders by focusing on form and emotional content.

Parcours des Mondes 2014

For its 13th edition, taking place September 9–14, Parcours des Mondes will have the pleasure of presenting 68 exhibitors, half of them coming from outside of France, and with the exceptional participation of nine American art dealers, including the Thomas Murray, Bruce Frank, Jacaranda, and Donald Ellis. Arts from Africa will have the place of honor, but also the arts of Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, as well as arts of the Himalayas, Indonesia, India, and elsewhere. Also to be noted is a clear and natural expansion into archaeological works with classical antiquities from Egypt and the Near East.

BRUNEAF XXIV

The 24th Brussels Non-European Art Fair (BRUNEAF) will be held this year on June 4–8. For those five days, the Sablon district of Brussels will become the epicenter of the tribal art world, with some fifty international tribal art dealers participating and several thematic exhibitions having been announced as part of the event. Joaquin Pecci will host Présence du Sacré, Invocations Ubangiennes (The Presence of the Sacred, Ubangi Invocations), David Serra will hold a thematic show called Formes et Matières (Forms and Materials), Alain Bovis’ show will be titled Têtes (Heads), and Maine Durieu will be putting on an exhibition called Autour du Blanc (About White). The quality of movement in the arts of Africa and Oceania will be the theme in Jo de Buck’s gallery, and Men in Africa is the title of the show that will be seen at Joëlle Fiess and Marc Félix’s Congo Gallery. Finally, Ángel Martín will feature a group of forty terracotta pieces from the Galma River region of Nigeria.

AOA Tribal Art Fair 2014

In its fourth year for 2014, New York's AOA Tribal Art Fair has moved its location from the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion to the Tambaran Gallery building at 5 E. 82nd Street, directly across the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s participants will include Ben Hunter from London; Galerie Flak from Paris; Galerie J. Visser and Horma Visser Koottmar from Brussels; and Tambaran Gallery, Moreau Gallery, Claudia Giangola and John Menser (Ancient Art of the New World), and Gail Martin Gallery from New York. The AOA Fair will run from May 15-18.

Paris Tribal

The first annual edition of Paris Tribal will be held on April 3–6 in the Beaux-Arts/Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood of Paris. The event will bring together twenty-six galleries located in the uncontested capital of the tribal art world. TEFAF 2014

The European Fine Art Fair will present its 26th annual edition in its traditional home of Maastricht on March 14–23. Excellence in art from all world regions and historical eras will be the order of the day, as ever. Representing the traditional arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas at this year's TEFAF will be a distinguished group of dealers including Galerie Claes, Galerie Bernard de Grunne, Galerie Entwistle, and Galerie Meyer.

San Francisco Tribal and Textiles Arts Show

Featuring more than 100 dealers under a single roof, the 28th annual San Francisco Tribal & Textile Arts Show, will be held, as always, in the Festival Pavilion of Fort Mason Center on February 6–9, 2014. For nearly three decades, this vetted show has brought together a remarkable selection of tribal art and textiles from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The intro exhibition for this year’s event will be titled Masks Then and Now: Inspiration and Interpretation, assembled by dealer Thomas Murray and featuring antique tribal masks from the Himalayas and Indonesia together with contemporary works by sculptor Mort Golub from his “Shamanic Mask Series.”

Madison Ancient and Tribal Art 2013

Madison Ancient and Tribal Art will be held this month at New York City's Arader Gallery from November 13–16. MATA is an alliance of International dealers specializing in the art of traditional cultures, among them such highly regarded names as Marc Assayag, Kellim Brown, Bruce Frank, Jacaranda, Charles Moreau, James Stephenson, Tamabaran Gallery and Pace Primitive. The Fall MATA exhibit will run concurrently with the exhibition and sale of the Allan Stone collection of African, Oceanic and Indonesian art at Sotheby's, and the auction of fine tribal art at Bonhams. 

Jacaranda Tribal will present a range of antique tribal works from cultures across the globe, from gorgeous Hawaiian fish hooks to Congolese power figures.

San Francisco Tribal

From October 25–27, the sixteen-member dealer group San Francisco Tribal will hold its annual group show at the Fleet Room of Fort Mason Center, not far from the Golden Gate Bridge. Artworks offered will include a wide array of African, Oceanic, pre-Columbian, Asian, and Indonesian sculpture, masks, jewelry, and textiles. This show always reveals unexpected treasures at rational prices.

Tribal Art Fair Amsterdam 2013

From October 24–27, the eleventh annual Tribal Art Fair will take be held in the Amsterdam church known as “De Duif.” Twenty dealers from the Netherlands and abroad will exhibit objects from Oceania, Africa, Asia, and South America, including sculptures and jewelry but also textiles, masks, implements, and furniture. The fair will also include a number of lectures: Harry Beran will talk about traditional Massim art and the extent to which Massim woodcarvers develop a recognizable personal style, while Leif Pareli from the Norsk Folkemuseum will talk about the art and life of the Sami, who live in the Scandinavian arctic region.
