Art of the South Seas at Bonhams

Bonhams will hold its annual Art of the South Seas auction on February 9 in San Francisco. The sale will present over 180 works from all parts of Oceania: Australia, Indonesia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Highlights will include carvings from the Cook Islands and Austral Islands, Papua New Guinea masks, Maori nephrite objects, royal items from Hawaii, and more.

BRAFA 2014

From January 25 through February 2, 2014, Tours & Taxis will be the setting for the Brussels Antiques and Fine Arts Fair (BRAFA), which promises, as always, to be of great interest to Belgian collectors as well as international visitors. Tribal art will be represented this year by ten dealers and galleries: Pierre Dartevelle, Bernard Dulon, Yann Ferrandin, Jacques Germain, Bernard de Grunne, Sarah de Monbrison, Adrian Schlag, Serge Schoffel, and Galerie Schoffel-Valluet, as well as by the event’s vice president, Didier Claes.

Arman the Collector: The Artist's Collection of African Art

In its final week at the Paul Kasmin Gallery is Arman the Collector: The Artist’s Collection of African Art, a selection of twenty traditional African works from the noted artist’s private collection, now administrated by the Arman Marital Trust. This non-commercial installation can be seen until January 11 at the gallery’s 293 Tenth Avenue location in New York City.

Encounters along the Missouri River: The 1858 Sketchbooks of Charles Wimar

An installation at the St. Louis Art Museum features the contents of two sketchbooks Wimar filled with drawings during his first trip up the Missouri. Encounters along the Missouri River: The 1858 Sketchbooks of Charles Wimar features the books’ small leaves, most with multiple images accurately rendered in pencil and carefully notated with names. These augmented photographs he took (now lost) and art objects he collected, all in an effort to add greater veracity to his paintings. On view until January 19, 2014.

Balance of Power: A Throne for an African Prince

According to Yoruba oral history, artist Olówè of Ise (about 1870–1938) could sculpt a person’s likeness on the spot—without looking at the wood he was carving. This special exhibition spotlights a single extraordinary work by Olówè: a throne he made for Prince Ilori, heir apparent of the town of Isè in southwestern Nigeria. This exhibition is organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts. On view until March 16th, 2014.
