Visions from the Forests: Art of Liberia and Sierra Leone

Visions from the Forests: The Art of Liberia and Sierra Leone will be on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art through Aug. 17. The exhibition features some seventy artworks from the collection of William Siegmann (1943–2011) that survey the traditional arts of Liberia and Sierra Leone. Siegmann, a former curator of African art at the Brooklyn Museum, lived and worked in Liberia from 1965 to 1987. While there, he began collecting art, and his collection, particularly rich in masks, provides an overview of the region’s traditional art forms, including numerous objects used in men’s and women’s initiation associations, jewelry and prestige objects of cast brass and horn, small stone figures dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and woven and dyed textiles.

African Masters at the Museum Rietberg

African Masters. Art from the Ivory Coast is a major exhibition now on view at the Museum Rietberg in Zürich through June 1. Spanning 200 years of art and featuring some 200 masterpieces by around forty sculptors, this show is the first to examine African artists of different generations from six major art regions of West Africa and the works attributed to them. It refutes the still widespread view that traditional African art was almost devoid of aesthetic principles and that Africa had no proper artists, only anonymous sculptors working in tribal workshops. Visitors to this ambitious exhibition will be able to discover the great masters of the Guro, Baule, Dan, Senufo, Lobi and Lagoon peoples and admire their most famous works – sculptures and masks of intense power and beauty.

Mal D'Africa - La costruzione di una collezione

Approaching its final week on view at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan is Mal D'Africa - La construzione di una collezione, an exhibition showcasing the tribal art collection of the late Alessandro Passarè.  The collection comprises some 400 works from Africa, Oceania, and the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as thousands of slides and a range of manuscripts and travel diaries. Most of the objects on display in the installation are sourced from private collections and have never before been publicly exhibited.
