Double Take: African Innovations

Celebrating Africa's continual dynamism and long tradition of artistic creativity, Double Take: African Innovations opens the doors to the Brooklyn Museum's storied African collection with a new, experimental installation that invites surprising and unexpected ways of looking at African art. It suggests universal themes that link seemingly dissimilar works, often across vast distances of time and space, while also presenting them within their own specific context of history and place.

Gold of the Gods from Java

The Javanese Kingdom remained closed to outsiders for over a thousand years, with only the statues hewn from lava rock at Borobudur displaying the wealth with which the Javanese rulers venerated their gods. This month, the Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam premiered a dedicated exhibition to the splendor of Javanese ceremonial art entitled Gold of the Gods. The installation presents an extensive collection of gold items from the seventh to the eleventh centuries and is on view until April 6, 2015.

L'art de manger

Cooking, eating, drinking—these activities may seem mundane to some, but they play an important role in such highly symbolic practices as marriages, births, initiations, and funerary rites. When ritualized, the act of eating becomes an activity that requires special utensils, as varied as they may be refined: dishes, bowls, cups, spoons, and ladles, to mention but a few. Food, the foundation for any group’s survival and its members’ well-being, also allows man to relate to the beings of other realms. These practices and the multitude of objects associated with them will be the subject of L’Art de Manger: Rites et Traditions (The Art of Eating: Rites and Traditions), on view at the Musée Dapper from October 15, 2014–July 12, 2015.
