New Acquisitions at Jacaranda Tribal

Floral Journey: Native North American Beadwork

Art and spirituality converge with trade and commerce in Floral Journey: Native North American Beadwork, an exhibition currently on view at the Autry National Center of the American West. Through 250 unique objects and related personal stories, the exhibition presents moccasins, bags, dresses, hats, jackets, and other exquisite beaded and quilled items, selected from fifteen cultural institutions and multiple private collections, which together explore how beaded floral designs became a significant artistic motif as well as a means of economic and cultural survival for Native North American peoples.

MATA NYC 2014

Madison Ancient and Tribal Art (MATA) will return this year on May 14–18. The prestigious event will be held at the same location as it has been the past two years at Arader Gallery, 1016 Madison Avenue. Participating dealers will include Marc Assayag from Montreal; Kellim Brown, Kevin Conru, and Adrian Schlag from Brussels; Joshua Dimondstein from California; Wayne Heathcote from Miami; P.-M. Boyd from Seattle; Splendors of the World from Hawaii; Leonard Kalina from Los Angeles; and Bruce Frank, Jacaranda Tribal, Amyas Naegele, Michael Oliver, and James Stephenson from New York. A number of permanent New York galleries are also associated : Alaska on Madison, Art For Eternity, Arte Primitivo, Fernandez Leventhal, and Pace Primitive.

William Jamieson Collection at Auction

The renowned collection of William (Billy) Jamieson will be sold at online auction at Waddington's of Canada on April 28–May 1.  An astonishing assemblage of anthropological and macabre curiosities, Jamieson's collection includes a wide range of artifacts, weapons, reliquaries and trophy heads from traditional cultures in Oceania, South America, and elsewhere.

Indiens des plaines

Indiens des plaines is currently on view at the Musée du Quai Branly through Sunday, July 20. The exhibition consists of 140 objects and artworks which present a continuous view of the artistic aesthetics of the Plains Indians, from the 16th to the 20th century, offering an unprecedented view of these traditions.

Visions from the Forests: Art of Liberia and Sierra Leone

Visions from the Forests: The Art of Liberia and Sierra Leone will be on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art through Aug. 17. The exhibition features some seventy artworks from the collection of William Siegmann (1943–2011) that survey the traditional arts of Liberia and Sierra Leone. Siegmann, a former curator of African art at the Brooklyn Museum, lived and worked in Liberia from 1965 to 1987. While there, he began collecting art, and his collection, particularly rich in masks, provides an overview of the region’s traditional art forms, including numerous objects used in men’s and women’s initiation associations, jewelry and prestige objects of cast brass and horn, small stone figures dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and woven and dyed textiles.

The New Found Land: Engravings by Theodor de Bry

The New Found Land: Engravings by Theodor de Bry from the Collection of Michael N. Joyner, at the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until April 13, 2014, highlights prints made by the Franco-Flemish engraver Theodor de Bry (1528–1598) to illustrate the 1590 edition of A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia by Thomas Harriot. De Bry’s images and Harriot’s text offered Europeans a detailed account of the appearance and customs of Native Americans encountered in 1585 by the British settlers on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. In addition to the illustrations for Harriot’s book, the installation includes portraits, maps, and other materials related to the so-called “Age of Exploration” 400 years ago, as well as a selection of Native American artifacts.

Regards Croisés: Jean-Michel Atlan / Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie

Sotheby's Paris will present a selling exhibition of paintings by Jean-Michel Atlan on April 9–17 . Offering an expansive look at some of the artist's most iconic works, the exhibition will be complemented by highlights from the upcoming African & Oceanic Art auctions in New York and Paris on 16 May and 18 June. These figures will pay tribute to one of the most atypical artists from the post-war generation.
